Van Cleef & Arpels is a luxury French jeweller, watchmaker, and perfumer. It is more than a business; it is a love tale told via fine jewels and exquisite fragrances. It all started when Alfred Van Cleef, a master of precious stone cutting, fell in love with Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a dealer in those stones. He was 24 years old, and she was only 19 years old.
The couple shared more than youthful enthusiasm, a passion for jewelry, and a taste for taking on a challenge: they enjoyed constant family support. Alfred Van Cleef and his brother-in-law Charles Arpels formed a partnership.
In 1906, they launched their first business on the prestigious Place Vendôme. Between 1909 and 1939, the empire grew to include several stores. The family immigrated to the United States in 1942 and founded their first store in New York. The business soon expanded throughout Asia, and it remained family-owned and operated until 1999 when Compagnie Financière Richemont S.A purchased it.
Through the long journey of the house royalty, notable political leaders, socialites, and several actors and celebrities have worn the brand's jewelry.
Although they never shared the identities of their private clientele, many legendary beauties have been photographed in the jewels: from Audrey Hepburn to Scarlett Johanssen, Grace Kelly to Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Taylor to Sharon Stone.

When Jean-Claude Ellena was commissioned to produce First for the perfume business in 1976, it was the world's first 'jewelry fragrance.' 'I dreamed of a perfume in the image of our jewels: discreet yet precious, fleeting but extremely present,' said Pierre Arpels. Arpels also pondered the link between a gem and ascent when the VC&A debuted the ground-breaking First. 'They are the two adornments of ladies,' he said. 'A dress is an item in a woman's wardrobe... Her shoes and handbag are just extras.
On the other hand, a gem would never be considered an accessory, and neither is it a perfume. Perfume is the ultimate adornment for me...'
